This is just too painful to watch. LOL! I mean don’t get me wrong. I like Kris and the fact that he won AI but he’s just committed a wanton act of musical homicide without even trying. Truthfully Adam Lambert wasn’t as bad as this even though all he does is scream.

    • Nina January 24, 2011 at 1:42 am #

Who is Adam Lambert? Did he cover this song?

      • Deana January 24, 2011 at 7:49 am #

Adam covered Mad World. Not an Adam fan at all, but I did like that song, and I might have bought it. ;)

  2. Angie January 23, 2011 at 2:38 am #

Wow, that was so bizzare and terribly confusing…some ‘Kris’ guy doing TFF and MJ whilst channeling JM? (John Mayer). And yet strangely I rather enjoyed it!

PS – obviously MJ knew a good thing when he heard it. Hurrah! :)

  3. webwezal January 23, 2011 at 3:24 am #

Well, Curt at least the song is getting air play.

  4. Celeste January 23, 2011 at 4:28 am #

And it’s “so sad they had to fade it!” :P

  5. Deana January 23, 2011 at 7:26 am #

What do you mean by “proof that MJ ripped us off”?

    • Celeste January 24, 2011 at 1:28 am #

Deana: I think Curt is joking. Whenever he does this: :) it means that he’s joking. :)

      • Deana January 24, 2011 at 7:49 am #

        Ok, thanks.

  6. Deana January 23, 2011 at 7:32 am #

Celeste, just curious: you don’t like the fact that Kris covered this song (obviously you don’t think he did a very good job) or that he mashed it up with the The Way You Make Me Feel? I’m a huge Kris Allen fan, and I happen to like it. =) I like this song, but I would have never heard it without Kris covering it, so…

    • Celeste January 24, 2011 at 1:17 am #

Deana: No it’s not that I didn’t like the EWTRTW cover. I like the cover just fine. What I mean when I say that “he’s committed wanton act of musical homicide” is that he’s trying too hard to be like Curt. But what’s the point in covering a song when you 1. don’t even know all of the lyrics to the song, and 2. try to be Michael Jackson at the same time?

      • frak January 24, 2011 at 2:15 am #

Are you sure you like Kris Allen as you say? I don’t see anything wrong with singing a song he enjoys at his own concert. In terms of lyrics, people make mistakes. It’s not like this is studio recording and it is being put out there as a single. It’s just something to add in his set.

        • Celeste January 25, 2011 at 1:23 am #

I like him. I didn’t say he wasn’t a good singer. I just think that it was a bizare mash up.

          • frak January 25, 2011 at 5:21 am #

I was responding to your “homicidal”/lyrics/trying-to-be-somebody comment since you said it after saying you liked him. I never assumed you didn’t think he was a good singer…? Anyway, I do know he’s a huge fan of the Beatles and Michael Jackson. He looked pretty giddy singing EWTRTW and “The Way You Make Me Feel,” which I find funny. This was the second time he did this mash up, and I think it’s because he got such a good response from trying it the night before.

  7. Mel January 23, 2011 at 7:40 am #

Ha. He bridges the gen gap for the song! ;p I missed the TFF concert in HK last year :( I hope I will have another chance again. Subscribing RSS now so I won’t miss it next time. Have a great 2011!

  8. a music fan January 23, 2011 at 10:20 am #

I’m a fan of Kris Allen’s, and I never thought I would follow anything coming out of American Idol until this guy. One of the many reasons I support this artist is he was already a songwriting musician who just stayed true to who he is and what he was brought up with. He grew up listening to classics (his dad was a musician) and not just only what is current. Though I totally understand a fan’s allegiance to the original song (I’m like that) – so far I have not once disliked songs he might cover in his live shows. Sometimes he renewed my love for them, because I had forgotten it. I think it’s a good thing, bringing songs to the attention a newer generation.

  9. emma January 23, 2011 at 1:10 pm #

    love it!

  10. Brian January 23, 2011 at 2:33 pm #

Well – that was certainly an interesting mashup choice…if folks are going to cover other artists, its not necessarily bad that they put their own spin on it…though, to my taste, the spin on this one is retrograde…

  11. Deb January 23, 2011 at 6:01 pm #

Always loved this song and am thankful for being reminded of it from this great rendition. Lovely!

  12. Moses composes January 23, 2011 at 6:40 pm #

This is a clever mash-up. Kris is a crafty little bugger. I guess that’s why he won.

I prefer to think of you as MJ’s muse, though. :)

  13. Deb January 23, 2011 at 7:04 pm #

Thank you for the song and for the vid!

  14. Steph January 23, 2011 at 7:30 pm #

I think this is a great cover. Kris sounds really good. Thanks for posting, Curt! :)

  15. gabby5 January 23, 2011 at 7:55 pm #

I agree, Papa S. and you guys.

  16. Deana January 24, 2011 at 7:47 am #

Celeste, thanks for your response. First of all, Kris Allen is a HUGE Michael Jackson fan. He has listened to MJ since he was 8 I believe. (We’re still waiting for him to surprise us with the moon walk.) When they had MJ week on Idol, Kris was the one helping people find a song…in fact, he suggested Allison’s song. (Same with Beatles week actually.) Anyway, it makes sense to his fans that he would mash EWTRTW up with an MJ song.

I certainly didn’t get the feeling that Kris was trying to be anybody but Kris. I saw him live 4 times this summer, and he just has a good time when he’s performing. Kris has plenty of great material of his own, but covers are fun. I remember Keith Urban throwing some covers in, and so did Lady Antebellum. In fact, when Kris opened for Maroon 5 in Atlanta (I was there), they did covers too. So it’s only normal. I would think TFF fans would be happy/honored that their artist got covered. Anyway, nice to chat with some TFF fans. Thanks for your input. :)

    • Celeste January 25, 2011 at 1:44 am #

Hey no problem. I just want to be able to express what I think without being ripped apart for thinking the way that I do. :)
The song choices were interesting to say the least but the mashup wasn’t executed very well. While it is honorable for other artists like Kris to cover TFF’s songs it is mind boggling as to why he didn’t do Everybody Wants To Rule The World or some other Tears For Fears song during Day You Were Born week instead of All She Wants To Do Is Dance.

      • leigh January 25, 2011 at 2:32 am #

the song that he sang alongside everybody wants to rule the world is ‘the way you make me feel’ by michael jackson, not ‘all she wants to do is dance’.

        • Allison January 25, 2011 at 5:32 am #

yes we know that. We were referring to the song he sang one week on American idol.

      • Arlene January 25, 2011 at 2:40 am #

Celeste: American Idol contestants aren’t given a free choice of which songs to sing on any given week. They select from a list provided to them by the producers. If the song they want to perform isn’t on the list, or if another contestant gets a song they wanted, there’s not much they can do about it.

        • Celeste January 25, 2011 at 6:00 am #

Arlene that’s not true. In season two there were two contestants who sang the same song. Clay Aiken was one of them and I forget who else. :)

          • Arlene January 25, 2011 at 6:07 am #

It may not have been true in Season 2, but it was true as of a few seasons ago. I have it on unimpeachable authority from someone involved. :)

          • frak January 25, 2011 at 6:47 am #

Arlene, they are stuck to a list but you can try to get a song not in a list approved. Kris didn’t like or want to do any of the songs on the list for movie week, so he asked for “Falling Slowly” which is from an indie movie he loved (“Once”). If it weren’t for Kris, American Idol would have never put “Falling Slowly” in a list for Season 9 because it is an obscure song (even though it won an Oscar). Swell Season sent him a autographed vinyl, appreciating him for doing that song. But I know sometimes you can’t get it approved, because he said couldn’t get “Hey Jude” approved for Idol, but he was able to get “Hey Jude” approved for summer tour :)

So, I think Celeste did bring up a good point as to why Kris didn’t choose EWTRTW. Maybe it wasn’t on the list, and he just didn’t think of the song from the top of his head that it came out in !985. I think he’d be kicking himself if he realizes he could have chosen that song lol

    • frak January 25, 2011 at 6:21 am #

Hey Deana, I think you were thinking of Rock Week since Kris sang a Beatles song. There wasn’t a Beatles week during Season 8, but I think there was in Season 9…which I don’t want to talk about LOL.

  17. Allison January 24, 2011 at 7:37 pm #

What I wonder is, when it was “Year you were Born” week, Kris said he had the hardest time finding a good song, and I remember he even dissed the music of that year. So he “settled” with Don Henley’s “All She Wants To Do Is Dance.” (Which was panned by the judges.) But what’s funny is that, like me, Kris was born in 1985, and I do believe that was the release year of EWTRTW. He seems to really love this song, why didn’t he pick it on the show?

    • Arlene January 25, 2011 at 2:41 am #

Allison: See my reply to Celeste above ;)

      • Allison January 25, 2011 at 5:34 am #

Thanks Arlene – I had a feeling it had to do with that. But man, it should be on the list! :)

  18. KN January 25, 2011 at 5:45 am #

Uh, Curt? What about Simple Minds? “Waterfront”, right? ;)

Cary Brothers has also been playing a great cover of EWTRTW live. I’m sure it’s on YouTube somewhere…
